The Palmetto Express project is an innovative, lower-cost alternative to traditional highway construction that offers options to increase time reliability. The project combines proven cost-efficient transportation management techniques, including dynamic tolling to meet travel demands today and in the future. The dynamic tolling feature promotes an increase in highway efficiency and encourages travel in off peak times.
The Palmetto Express lanes will be constructed on the far left side of the road and separated from the non-tolled general purpose lanes by a barrier of flexible express lanes markers.
The 75 Express lanes will be constructed along the median and separated from the general purpose lanes by grass separators or concrete barrier walls.
Yes. The speed limit is 55 mph, both in the express lanes and the general purpose lanes within Miami-Dade County.
Travel speeds are not guaranteed on the express lanes. While FDOT works toward maintaining speeds at 45 mph or above, the main goal is to optimize the express lanes’ vehicle throughput by moving the highest number of vehicles possible in the safest and most efficient manner.

Do not enter the express lanes. Use the non-tolled general purpose lanes.
Stay in the express lanes until you can safely exit at the end. Remain calm, do not stop or weave in between the plastic poles.
Express lanes are meant for long distance travel only. Express lanes entrances and exits are limited to improve traffic flow by reducing the number of vehicles changing lanes in and out of the facility. This reduction of lane changing also maximizes safety along the facility.
The Florida Department of Transportation is taking the lead in implementing the Palmetto Express lanes project.
